The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center + Code GIVE263

Have any idea what to do if you encounter an injured bird or other wildlife needing assistance? Many of us haven’t the first clue. Huntington Beach residents Michelle Johnson and her daughter Milani made a good call when they found themselves in that situation: They reached out to The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center when they encountered an injured bird. “Last summer, our friend found an injured hummingbird who flew into their office building window. We contacted The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center and they accepted the injured bird,” Michelle shares.

The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center opened its doors in 1998, in response to a nightmare situation in 1990 when 400,000 gallons of Alaskan crude oil were spilled off the coast of Huntington Beach and fewer than half of the 1,200 birds who were sickened by the oil survived treatment at a makeshift facility. Now, up to 400 animals at a time can receive the care they need after being injured in daily encounters with us humans. Luckily for the animals who receive care there, The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center is dedicated not only to the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned native wildlife, but also to their release back into the wild -- they never condone bringing home and trying to domesticate wildlife. Think squirrels are cute? That’s nice. Watch them do their thing from afar and leave them alone. You’d have to be nuts to bring one home and try to make it a family pet.
